Take One Action: Imagining a Community-Led Social Centre for Edinburgh

Join Take One Action for an imaginative workshop exploring what a community-led social centre in central Edinburgh could look like - and the many possibilities a space like this might offer.

We’ll look at examples of social centres from around the world and hear from the founders of Pelican House in London, alongside short provocations from local groups about potential uses for an Edinburgh space - from free meeting rooms for community organising to performance spaces, a community diner, a crèche, rights clinics, gardens, or a community newsroom.

Together, we’ll co-design our own imagined social centres, with a shared meal made from sustainable local ingredients. A small travel and childcare fund is available (email rachel@takeoneaction.org.uk).

BSL interpretation will be provided, and full access information is available via the link. This event is supported by Edinburgh’s Regenerative Futures Fund.

GreenTech Buildathon

GreenTech Buildathon

Book your free place

What if a great idea to make your community climate work easier could become a real tool in just one day?

ECCAN is teaming up with CodeBase to host a Buildathon focused on getting fast, actionable solutions into the hands of those on the frontline of community-led action.

This event is designed to find actionable, accessible solutions to the challenges people working on community-led climate action face. It will take place at CodeBase Edinburgh, 35a Castle Terrace on Monday 24th November from 10am to 5.30pm.

We’re inviting staff, volunteers, and climate-curious people—the experts in real-world climate action—alongside coders and designers. You don't need any experience in technology or coding to participate! Your job is to bring the problem and the context; we’ll build the dream team to find a solution. This is a unique opportunity to link diverse skillsets for our common net-zero goals.

Here are the kinds of concrete challenges this Buildathon is designed to tackle:

· Impact Reporting: "Our local food-growing project tracks how much produce we redistribute, but we struggle to clearly show our volunteers and funders the total environmental impact (e.g., CO2 saved) and social impact (e.g., meals provided)." A team could prototype a simple, data visualization dashboard to automatically generate a clear, shareable impact graphic.

· Resource Sharing: "Our member groups need to share resources like successful funding applications or recruitment posters, but they're currently scattered across emails and shared drives." A team could build a searchable, tag-based resource library/portal for the ECCAN network.

We Need Your Problem Statements!

Before we can build, we need to know what to build. We are inviting you to submit Problem Statements—a clear, concise description of an issue or opportunity you face in your daily climate work.

Think of your Problem Statement as a blueprint. It helps a team of innovators understand the goal and what needs to be solved.

When you're writing your statement, be sure to include:

· What is the problem? Clearly describe the specific issue you face.

· Who is affected? Identify the people or groups impacted (e.g., volunteers, community members, local groups).

· Why does it need a solution? Explain the benefits of solving it and how it will improve your climate work.

· What's the desired outcome? Describe what the situation would look like if the problem were resolved.

Don't worry about having all the answers—the goal is to define the problem clearly so a mixed-skill team can take it on and prototype a solution!

Do you have a problem that, if solved, would accelerate your community's climate action? Submit your problem statement before 17th November and let's build something great together!

If you have any questions about what makes a good problem statement or how to get involved, please get in touch with us!

In this event, you'll hear engaging talks from academics at Heriot-Watt University, who will share why restoring oysters is so important and how these humble shellfish are the building blocks for enhancing biodiversity.

You will also hear from the Forth Marine Hatchery, an innovative native oyster hatchery in East Lothian, working with Restoration Forth to help upscale native oyster production for restoration in the Firth of Forth, while reducing biosecurity and invasive species risks.

This event shall run from 6.30pm to 9.00pm

Jonathon Porritt: 'Love Anger & Betrayal'. Speaker Tour, Edinburgh

Join veteran climate (and now Palestine) campaigner Jonathon Porritt for an evening discussing his new book, which asks "What good are science and rational persuasion if no one is paying attention?"

His eleventh book, 'Love, Anger & Betrayal', visits the latest generation of climate activists and documents the experiences of 26 insightful young people - his co-authors - who joined Just Stop Oil's Nonviolent Civil Resistance. The book reveals their passion for a just and sustainable transition away from our global economic and cultural dependence on fossil fuels. But who, with the political power, is listening?

Author of many highly respected books, Porritt believes it's 'not too late' to avoid climate breakdown. But that very soon it will be.

Putting his money where his mouth is, Jonathon has twice been arrested recently under Terrorism legislation for his involvement in Defend Our Juries' 'Lift the Ban' campaign to de-proscribe Palestine Action. He was arrested alongside hundreds of others for peacefully holding a placard reading "I oppose Genocide. I support Palestine Action".

Climate Ready South East Scotland: Shareback event

images of various scottish landmarks within circles

Climate Ready South East Scotland (CRSES) published the first climate risk and opportunity assessment for the Edinburgh and South East Scotland city region in April 2025. By working together with hundreds of organisations and communities in phase 1 of the project, they now have a better understanding of how climate change will affect our region, and where we need to prioritise adaptation action together to minimise risks and maximise opportunities.

Phase 2 of CRSES is now underway and activities planned for this year will take us from risk assessment results to delivering collaborative climate resilience action on the ground

This informal webinar is a chance to learn more about the key findings from the climate risk and opportunity assessment, the collaboration's priorities for 2025-26 and how you can get involved in robust, collaborative climate resilience action within our region.

Join Verture and their Local Authority partners for this informative and hands-on session, and help Edinburgh and South East Scotland become more resilient to the impacts of climate change.

Please note that this session is being recorded.

How you can help

Please join them, and share this invitation with your contacts.

The context

Edinburgh and South East Scotland's climate is already changing, and will continue to do so for decades after we reach net zero GHG emisisons. This means more extreme weather; hotter, drier, summers; wetter winters; more unpredictable seasons and rainfall, super-charged storms and rising sea levels.

These changes will affect our communities, and the places we care about – where we live, work and play. They will also affect the natural world, and the systems that we rely on, from transport, to food supply. We need to become more resilient to the impacts of climate change to ensure that our region can prosper, and that all our communities and places can flourish. To find out about how climate change impacts are already affecting communities and places in Edinburgh and South East Scotland visit our project Story Map to hear from those being impacted today.

Funders

The project is being delivered as part of the Regional Prosperity Framework, with support from Capital City Partnership. The project is funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Scottish Government.
